SIGNS OF MY TIMES
Signs of My times
Ever since I can remember, I have had a fascination with signs. They turn up over and over again in my paintings. Once an art show attendee told me: “That would be a great painting of the Little Belt Mountains if it didn’t have that stupid sign in it” referring to my depiction of the black and yellow sign adjacent to a bridge that I had placed in foreground of that painting. My answer was “If it didn’t have the sign in it, it would be a landscape- not a Sue Toppen.”
Some signs are meant to be photographed not painted –Here are some from my photo collection. |

This hand-written sign was on a bridge in Guam. I stopped and backed up because I wasn't sure I had read it right. |

Our Lexy Lou went to Vet school on the island of St Kitts in the West Indies- an English colony. There were several signs there that amused me -this was one. |

Around the Castle that sits atop the hill at Knaresbourough England were several of these cautionary signs. The word scheme amused me as used here. |

A whole bunch of our very favorite kids had a sleep over at our place in July 2006. They put on a variety show of jokes, tricks, songs and dances and when the first curtains were drawn everyone could see this sign that Maddie had affixed to the door. |

Nephew Carter and I visited Philadelphia this summer and his big request was to go to the original Cheesesteak place. They are finicky about how you order there- so follow the rules! |
